What Is Metal Casting?

metal casting guide - precision cast metal parts

Metal casting is a family of manufacturing processes in which molten metal is poured into a reusable or expendable mold, allowed to solidify, and then finished to specification. According to the American Foundry Society (AFS), the metal casting industry supplies roughly 90% of all manufactured goods 그리고 all metal goods rely on cast components at some point in their production. For buyers, casting is the most economical way to produce complex near-net-shape parts in alloys that are difficult or impossible to machine economically — bronze, cast iron, ductile iron, zinc alloys, and high-alloy stainless.

> Buyer takeaway: If your part has internal cavities, complex 3D geometry, or needs to be made in an alloy that is hard to machine, casting almost always wins on cost-per-part above 200 units.

Metal Casting Guide: Main Processes Compared

There is no single “best” metal casting process. The four families below cover roughly 95% of industrial B2B casting work. Use this metal casting guide table to align your part with the right process before you brief a foundry.

How to Choose the Right Casting Alloy

Material choice drives cost, weight, corrosion resistance, and final machining. Below is the same alloy matrix we use in our own DFM review.

> Buyer takeaway: When two alloys will work, pick the one that is already in your foundry’s production schedule. Switching alloy families mid-project adds setup cost and lead time.

The 4-Step Decision Tree for Choosing a Casting Method

Use this decision tree the same way our engineering team does during DFM review.

1. Is the annual volume above 5,000 units and the part weight under 5 kg?
Die casting[/die-casting-services/) (Al, Zn, Mg)
2. Does the part need complex internal geometry, threads, or ≥ CT6 tolerance?
→ [Investment casting
(steel, stainless, copper, Al)
3. Is the part large (>300 mm), heavy, or in iron/steel with lower tolerance needs?
모래 주조 (green sand or resin-coated)
4. Is the part cylindrical, hollow, or a sleeve/bushing?
→ Centrifugal casting

If you are still on the fence between casting and machining a near-net-shape blank, our CNC Machining vs Casting comparison walks through the unit-cost crossover at common lot sizes (publishing soon).

Casting Tolerances and Surface Finish Standards

Tolerance and surface finish are where most RFQs go wrong. The two standards every B2B buyer should reference are:

ISO 8062 (cast dimensional tolerances) — defines CT4 to CT13. Most investment castings fall in CT4–CT6; sand castings in CT8–CT11. Tightening from CT8 to CT6 typically increases cost 30–80%.
ISO 1302 / ASME Y14.36M (surface texture) — Ra values from 0.8 µm (die cast) to 12.5 µm (as-cast sand). Most functional cast surfaces need a secondary CNC machining operation to reach Ra ≤ 0.8 µm.

If your part requires Ra ≤ 0.4 µm on functional surfaces, you should plan for 표면 처리 (polishing, grinding, or hard anodizing) on top of casting + machining.

Common Casting Defects and How to Prevent Them

The five defects that account for the majority of B2B casting rejections are porosity, shrinkage cavities, cold shuts, sand inclusions, and surface cracks. Each has a known root cause and a known prevention.

Porosity (gas) — caused by trapped air or steam in the mold. Prevent with proper venting, degassing (for aluminum), and controlled pouring temperature.
Shrinkage cavities — caused by inadequate risering. Prevent with simulation-backed riser design (we use MAGMA for critical parts).
Cold shuts — caused by low pouring temperature or slow pour. Prevent with temperature control and proper sprue design.
Sand inclusions — caused by mold erosion. Prevent with proper sand binder, mold hardness, and filtration.
Surface cracks — caused by uneven cooling or excessive restraint. Prevent with controlled cooling and shake-out timing.

A full defect-by-defect playbook with photos and root-cause flowcharts is in our Common Casting Defects and How to Prevent Them guide (publishing soon).

Quality Control and Certifications You Should Verify

Before signing a PO, confirm your foundry can deliver the following — and ask for a sample of the actual certificate, not just a logo on a website:

StandardWhat It CoversWhen You Need It
ISO 9001:2015Quality management system baselineAlways
IATF 16949Automotive QMSAutomotive casting projects
ISO 14001Environmental managementEU-bound shipments
ASTM E192Radiographic testing referencePressure-containing parts
ASTM A703Steel casting general requirementsSteel castings
NADCADie casting dimensional standardsDie castings
EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2Material certificateEU pressure equipment

Supro MFG is ISO 9001:2015 certified and issues EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates on every heat-treated or pressure-containing shipment. See our services overview for the full QC documentation we provide.

What to Send in Your First RFQ to a Casting Supplier

The fastest way to get a useful quote is to send a tight RFQ. We use this exact 7-item checklist internally for our own suppliers — share it with any new vendor:

1. 3D model (STEP / IGES) — not just a drawing
2. 2D drawing with GD&T — critical tolerances, datums, surface finish callouts
3. Material specification — alloy grade and standard (e.g. “ASTM A536 65-45-12”)
4. Annual volume — and tooling amortization expectation
5. Quality requirements — certificates, NDT scope, PPAP if automotive
6. Surface finish — as-cast, machined, or finished
7. Target price and lead time — including whether tooling is one-time or amortized

If you are unsure how to structure a foundry-ready RFQ, our engineering team can review your package at no charge. Send us your 3D model and drawing and we will come back with a DFM note within one business day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between casting and forging?
Casting pours liquid metal into a mold; forging presses or hammers a solid billet into shape. Forged parts are stronger along the grain direction; cast parts can be more complex and cheaper in volume. For most B2B applications under 500 MPa, casting wins on geometry freedom and cost.

Which casting process is the cheapest?
Sand casting is almost always the cheapest per part for low volumes and large parts. Die casting wins on unit cost above 5,000 pieces, but the upfront tooling ($5,000–$50,000) only amortizes at higher volumes.

What tolerances can I expect from investment casting?
Standard investment casting is CT5–CT7 (ISO 8062). For tighter work, tooling can be adjusted to CT4. Going below CT4 is usually not cost-effective — switch to machined-from-billet.

Can I cast stainless steel?
Yes. 304, 316, 17-4PH, 2205 duplex, and most other stainless grades are routinely investment cast. We cover the full process in our investment casting service page.

What is the typical lead time for a casting order?
Sampling: 3–5 weeks for investment cast, 2–3 weeks for sand cast, 4–6 weeks for die cast tooling. Production runs add 4–8 weeks depending on lot size and post-machining.

Do you ship internationally?
Yes. Supro MFG ships to North America, the EU, Southeast Asia, and Australia with full export documentation, heat certificates, and FOB / CIF / DDP terms. 견적을 요청합니다 to discuss your shipment.

결론

A good metal casting guide does not end at “pick a process.” The real buying decisions — alloy, tolerance, finish, certification, RFQ structure — are where projects succeed or fail. Use the decision tree, alloy matrix, and defect playbook above as your first-pass filter, then bring your shortlisted foundries into the conversation early. The earlier a casting supplier is in your DFM loop, the lower your tooling cost and the faster your time-to-market.

Supro MFG runs sand, investment, and die casting under one roof in China, with in-house CNC machining, mold making, 열처리, and 표면 처리. We support customers in 자동차, marine, agricultural, valve and pump, and aluminum / copper alloy applications.

Send us your 3D model and we will get back to you with a DFM note and a target price within one business day.
