No sand binder, no flask, no new mold every shot. The mold is preheated to <strong style=\"color: #273171;\">200\u2013350 \u00b0C<\/strong>, coated with a refractory wash about <strong style=\"color: #273171;\">0.10\u20130.25 mm<\/strong> thick, and held at <strong style=\"color: #273171;\">300\u2013450 \u00b0C<\/strong> in production. Metal freezes against a chilled wall instead of an insulating one, which is where the property gains come from.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 18px;\">Four variants show up in supplier quotes, and they are not interchangeable:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin: 0 0 18px; padding-left: 22px;\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 8px;\"><strong style=\"color: #273171;\">Static gravity.<\/strong> Ladle or automated pour into a fixed mold. Simplest tooling, most turbulence, cheapest to modify.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 8px;\"><strong style=\"color: #273171;\">Tilt pour.<\/strong> The mold rotates through 90\u00b0 while filling, so metal enters from the bottom of the cavity. Oxide folding drops sharply and yields improve.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 8px;\"><strong style=\"color: #273171;\">Low-pressure (LPDC).<\/strong> 0.3\u20131.0 bar of dry air pushes metal up a riser tube. Fill is slow and laminar, and the tube feeds the casting, so risers can often be deleted \u2014 yields of <strong style=\"color: #273171;\">85\u201395%<\/strong> are normal against 70\u201385% for gravity.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 8px;\"><strong style=\"color: #273171;\">Vacuum \/ counter-pressure.<\/strong> The cavity is evacuated before fill for thin-wall or pressure-tight work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 18px;\">The constraint that surprises buyers first: in permanent mold casting the mold cannot be broken away to free the part. Deep undercuts and re-entrant geometry need sand cores set into the metal mold, or retractable steel core pulls, and both add cost per shot. A 10 mm wall frozen in green sand lands around <strong style=\"color: #273171;\">50\u2013100 \u00b5m<\/strong>; the same section run in permanent mold casting lands at <strong style=\"color: #273171;\">20\u201350 \u00b5m<\/strong>; high-pressure die casting gets down to 5\u201320 \u00b5m. Finer spacing means smaller eutectic particles, less microporosity between arms, and better ductility after the same heat treatment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 18px;\">On A356.0-T6 the difference is not marginal. ASTM B26 minimums for sand cast test bars are 234 MPa tensile \/ 165 MPa yield \/ 3.5% elongation; ASTM B108 for permanent mold is 310 MPa \/ 205 MPa \/ 5%. That is roughly <strong style=\"color: #273171;\">32% more tensile strength and 43% more elongation<\/strong> from the same alloy and the same T6 cycle. It also shortens the cycle: solution treatment at 540 \u00b0C takes 8\u201312 hours for sand castings but only 4\u20138 hours for permanent mold, because finer DAS dissolves Mg\u2082Si faster.
